A POSSE AD ESSE

Guidelines

Respect and inclusitivity - Above all else, APAE is a community where we value treating all members with respect, regardless of their background, identity, or role in the community. We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to matters of bigotry and harrassment. We ask that all members be mindful of the harmful and problematic tropes that often appear in fantasy fiction, and are happy to provide further resources. article1, video2, article3

Character Creation and Development - Despite playing into simplistic tropes, we encourage members to create well-rounded and believable characters, who react in understandable and potentially relatable ways. Due to the unusually complex method of character creation, acceptance is placed on the concept and narrative backstory. Mechanical impacts can be created or even assigned after joining the community.

Collaborative and Consensual Storytelling - Roleplaying is, by nature, a collaborative activity. We encourage members to communicate and mingle ooc, through the use of question prompts, monthly plots, and shared job plotting posts, in order to develope compelling storylines. Due to the potential for inter-personal conflict IC, it is vital that players obtain consent from all parties involved when exploring potentially sensitive or triggering topics, or initiating PVP / player-v-player conflict.

Community Etiquette - We encourage members to use appropriate language ooc, avoid personal attacks, and address any conflicts in a constructive matter. The moderators are here for a reason, and will act as a mediator as needed.

Posting Guidelines - Feel free to fill your character journal with whatever, and as much, as you'd like. We would suggest at least having the following on a dedicated journal at the time of application: - application - screened ooc contact - friendslocked ic contact.
A Posse is the OOC community. Monthly character plot threads will be posted here by the mod, and members are encouraged to post in the OOC community to discuss interests, plan upcoming threads, or anything else.
Ad Esse is the IC community. Open threads and logs, anything that is in-character desiring a response should be posted here. All posts should be friendslockedand appropriately tagged with character, location and content warnings. For formatting, we recommend using one of the entry codes provided by pro, but there is truly only one rule: Use the below cut. Beneath the cut, it can look like whatever you want.

Moderation and Conflict Resolution
Community moderators responsibilities include
- completing the admin grunt-work
- updating the community when characters join or leave
- creating monthly prompts for threads
- ensuring content is appropriate and tagged
- removing inappropriate content
- mediating and addressing any issues or conflicts
The procedure to report a concern within the community is to comment on the screened dropbox. A moderator will respond, contacting all parties before creating a shared space for conflict resolution.

Content and Trigger Warnings - We ask that members use content warning tags for potentially triggering or sensitive material. If a tag needs to be created, or if you notice a thread has not been accurately tagged, let the moderators know in the dropbox.

Activity and Participation - We encourage regular participation and engagement within the community, and to foster this while being understanding of outside commitments and priorities, we have a monthly activity requirement which is four-fold:
1 Completed or In-Progress IC thread
1 OOC answer to the monthly lore post
1 Retrospective media - moodboard, playlist, narrative log, other
Activity is checked on the last day of the month, based off of comments logged. Players who have not completed the activity check will have 1 week to come into compliance before being removed for inactivity.

Game Mechanics

A POSSE AD ESSE isn't your usual insanejournal group storyline. By combining the freeform narrative creativity that comes with third-person storybook roleplaying and the randomized structure of tabletop roleplaying games such as Dungeons & Dragons, we hope to create a community with a focus not only on definitive character development but also engaging, long-term plots.

Character Creation

Character creation for APAE is a bastardized version of D&D creation, and a familiarity with that system will certainly assist. However, please do not be intimidated by the numbers - if your character concept is interesting, and you have a willingness to learn, the moderators are happy to assist you.
The guide for character creation can be found here.
In summary, characters begin with 6 statistics that have modifiers between -1 to +2. Your character's class will provide an additional +1 to specific stats, as well as access to specific skills. Your character's ancestry will grant you your choice of +2 to any stat and +1 to any stat, or +1 to any three stats. Finally, give yourself two additional skills from your past lived experience.

Jobs + Rolls

Every month, three jobs will be posted with a mix of IC and OOC information. Each job is a quest that the Bladewind Brigade has been hired to complete, and typically will have a limit of four characters in the party. Players are expected to sign-up for their desired job, at which point they will be directed to a OOC thread with further information and encouraged to brainstorm with other players about how this might play out.
Of course, not everything always goes according to plan. To complete a job, there will be a minimum of 3 rolls, with more depending on the difficulty of the task. A roll consists of rolling a 20-sided die and then applying the appropriate stat or skill modifer.
The Difficulty Class (DC) of the roll, the number you need to reach in order to succeed, has been privately decided by Moderators at the time of Job creation. Generally speaking, however, a roll below 10 is considered a failure, a roll of 10-14 is considered a sucess with complication, and a roll of 15+ is considered a perfect success. These numbers are not guaranteed, and the result is decided solely by the moderator.
There is the risk of injury, and even potentially the death of your character during these jobs - this is, however, something that will always be discussed and decided OOC between moderator and player. In the fantastic realm of Elarian, filled with divine intervention and magic, death is rarely the end of a story.

Experience Points

After the successsful completion of a job, the character will be rewarded in the narrative, as will the player with experience points. A successful activity check will also grant a character 1 experience point. The Moderators may choose to bestow additional experience points at their discretion, typically for activity which goes 'above and beyond' expectations.
A character may spend 5 experience points to +1 in a skill they already have.
A character may spend 10 experience points to gain +1 in any stat, or gain a new skill.
This can be done on the level up post.

World Information

Elarian is a high-fantasy realm where ancient magic, mythical creatures, and diverse civilizations converge. From enchanted forests to majestic cities, it is a world brimming with both beauty and conflict, offering adventurers the chance to discover hidden wonders, unravel mysteries, and shape their destinies in the face of both light and darkness.

Elarian

The world of Elarian is currently comprised of the following kingdoms:
➜ the empire of Solara
➜ the elven kingdom of Elysia
➜ the dwarven strongholds of stonemar
➜ the fey dominion of Zephyria
➜ the cursed realm of Vaeloria
However this could change at any time - while many have a history that spans millenia, greater empires have fallen in the past, and powerful upstarts don't hesitate to launch a coup.

Our gpsl is currently based in the Empire of Solara, although threads frequently will be set across the world. See the town of Rhesdy for more details of the headquarters of the Bladewind Brigade.

Solara

THE HUMAN EMPIRE OF SOLARA
military might makes right

government: absolute monarchy, colonizing force
ruler: Empress Seraphina Ardentor

The Empire's origins can be traced back to the unification of several city-states under the visionary rule of First Emperor Sol Sunfire. With military might and strategic prowess, Emperor Sol led his forces to victory and established a centralized government in the heartland of humanity. In the centuries since, Solara has expanded its boarders through both conquest and diplomacy, assimilating diverse cultures through colonization. It became known for majestic cities, intricate infrastructure and flourishing trade routes.

However, the history of Solara has not been without its challenges. Rebellions and external threats are both met with a swift and bloody end through brutal and overwhelming military force - making internal power struggles rely on betrayal and subterfuge far more readily.

Today, under the wise and visionary rule of Empress Seraphina Ardentor, Solara stands as a beacon of strength and unity, ready to face the challenges of the future and shape the destiny of Elarian.

Settlements
Rhesdy - The adventuring outpost built up around the Bladewind Brigade.
Dewhurst - Midsized town near the border of Elysia

Elysia

THE ELVEN KINGDOM OF ELYSIA
harmony with nature

government: theocratic monarchy
ruler: The High Protector

Elysia is the ancient and magical kingdom of the elves, once a realm of unparalleled beauty and mysical wonders. Elves thrived, cultivating a deep connection with nature and harnessing potent arcane magic to their needs. For millenia, Elysia stood as a testament to harmony and enlightenment, revered for both its serene forests and the suffusion of magic through0out daily life.

However, the golden age of Elysia came to a tragic end with a cataclymic event known as the Sundering. This calamity, shrouded in mystery, unleashed devastating forces that tore through the kingdom, leaving destruction and chaos in its wake. The very fabric of Elysia was fractured, its magical energies weakened, and its once-vibrant landscapes scarred. Elves, once flourishing, suffered immense losses, and their dominion over maghic was shattered.

In the aftermath of the Sundering, Elysia's power waned, and the elven people struggled to rebuild their shattered realm. They turned their focus towards healing and preservation, seeking to mend the wound inflicted upon their once-majestic kingdom. To this day, heroes continue to deal with the wild magics which were inflicted upon the world from the Sundering.

Stonemar

THE DWARVEN STRONGHOLDS OF STONEMAR
isolationist industry and production

government: capitalist collective
ruler: The High Council of Stonehelm

The history of the Dwarven Strongholds is one of fortitude, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the earth. For millenia, dwarves honed their skills in mining, stonework, and metallurgy while establishing mighty forturesses deep within the mountains of Elarian. These citadells, such as Stonemar, served as bastions of dwarven culture, renowned for their masterful craftsmanship and impenetrable defenses.

However, as the world around them changed and other kingdoms rose and fell, the strongholds gradually became more isolationist. Several factors contributed to this shift, including their reverence for tradition, a desire to safeguard their vast underground resources, and a growing distrust of outside influences. As a result, they became largely self-contained societies, with extremely limited interactions with other kingdoms.

Zephyria

THE FEY DOMINION OF ZEPHYRIA
floating islands in the sky

government: constitutional monarchy
ruler: Aeris Stormwind, the Sky Monarch

The realm of Zephyria is one of ethereal beauty, where the realms of mortals and the fey intertwine. Nestled amongst the clouds, Zephyria is a realm of floating islands suspended by ancient magic and blessed with gentle breezes. The realm's inhabitants possess delicate wings and a natural affinity for the winds, allowing them to sora through the skies with grace.

In ancient times, Zephyria formed an alliance with the fey, forging a unique bond that shaped the realm's destiny. Fey magics allowed the Zephyrians to harness the powersa of elementals, forging unbreakabble bonds with these majestic beings. Through this partnership, Zephyria became a place of remarkable ingenuity and beauty.

Over the ages, Zephyria's reputation as a haven of enchantment and a hub of trade grew, attracting curious adventurers and merchants from far and wide. The realm became known for its vibrant markets, where fey traders and Zephyrian artisans showcased their wares. Reaching these markets is not always easy, however, for even once one manages to board one of Zephyria's airships, there is still the threat of sky pirates and worse before arrival.

Vaeloria

THE UNDEAD HORDES
what really is "evil" anyway?

government: tyrannical monarchy
ruler: The Sovereign of Shadows

Once, Vaeloria stood as a beacon of arcane mastery and enlightenment, but the ambitions of a malevolent necromancer known as the Sovereign of Shadows took root within its borders. Under the Sovereign's command, an army of undead swept across Vaeloria, bringing destruction and despair. The one-vibrant towers and citadels of magic were tainted and corrupted, overrun by the foul minions of the lich king. The realm's scholars, mages, and arcane practitioners were either enslaved or forced to flee, seeking refuge in distant lands.

Still ruled by the iron skeletal fist of the Sovereign of Shadows, little is known of its current situation in the other realms of Elarian. Rarely do mortals willingly enter the ever-present darkness of Vaeloria, and even rarer still does anyone living leave them. Only the bravest, or most fool-hardy, of heroes risk their lives by directly attacking the forces of evil that live in the doomed land.

THE COMPANY

Company History

In the realm of Elarian, where kingdoms rose and fell amidst the echoes of ancient magic, an adventuring company rose above the rest and carved its name into the annals of history - the Bladewind Brigade. Founded centuries ago by a charismatic and battle-hardened warrior named Aric Bladewind, the Brigade quickly gained a fearsome reputation. The company comprised skilled fighters, cunning rogues, and wise mages, united by their thirst for adventure and the allure of gold.

The Brigade's rise to prominence can be attributed to their unmatched expertise and unwavering loyalty. They have fought in countless wars, defended embattled kingdoms, and undertook perilour quests deemed too dangerous for ordinary mortals. Today, the Bladewind Brigade is lead by Terryn Dawnfire after his retirement from active duty, and stands as a beacon of hope, offering their services to those in need - if they have the coin to pay. The legacy of the Bladewind Brigade continues to inspire new generations of adventurers to seek fortune and flory in the ever-shifting tapestry of Elarian.

The Town of Rhesdy

Nestled within the borders of the Empire of Solara, the mid-sized town of Rhesdy serves as the bustling hub for adventurers drawn to the renowned Bladewind Brigade. Situated near the foothills of the Serpent's Spine Mountains, Rhesdy exudes an air of rugged charm and martial spirit. Its cobbled streets are lined with quaint shops, filled with merchants hawking weapons, armor, and magical trinkets sought by both seasoned warriors and aspiring heroes.

The heart of Rhesdy beats within the walls of the Bladewind Brigade's headquarters, an imposing structure adorned with the company's emblem. Aspiring adventurers flock to this prestigious establishment, seeking guidance and training from the experienced members of the Brigade. The town buzzes with tales of their daring exploits and serves as a meeting place for those seeking to join their ranks or hire their renowned services.

Despite its martial focus, Rhesdy also offers respite to weary travelers. The local taverns brim with camaraderie and laughter, while a lively market square entices visitors with tantalizing aromas of exotic spices and hearty fare. With its strategic location and the Bladewind Brigade as its beating heart, Rhesdy stands as a gateway to both perilous quests and the promise of fame and fortune in the sprawling Empire of Solara.
